In this era of sophisticated treatments to address our patients’ issues, there is a versatile and adaptable injectable product that regenerates and densifies the skin by stimulating collagen production for the long term.
A product that can be adapted according to the desired effects
In my medical aesthetics centre, we often get requests for skin rejuvenation treatments. Patients seek subtle volumisation that does not alter their features or facial expressions. With this in mind, I chose to use Lanluma®, an injectable product containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that is resorbed slowly and stands out thanks to its specific features. This biocompatible, synthetic polymer is used to stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production. Presented as a powder in a vial, the product is prepared using PPI water (purified for injection) prior to the procedure. Two versions are available: Lanluma® V for the face, neck, décolleté and hands and Lanluma® X to give volume and a tightening effect in the buttocks and a densifying effect in the arms, thighs and abdomen.
New dilution recommendations have been established by a panel of international experts. The determining factors for these different concentrations are the treatment zone and the patient’s skin type and skin quality. For very thin skin, a triple dilution is recommended. These new concentrations make the procedure safer and offer optimal results, to limit the risk of over-correction. With my medical experience and over the course of my career, I have noticed that it is best to inject smaller quantities, especially in the first appointment and space the sessions three months apart. We generally plan for two or three sessions. Depending on how the patient’s skin responds, we might opt for a double or triple dilution; the results appear more slowly but it offers a natural-looking and more structural effect over the long term. The skin is densified and smoothed and the effects last longer. For women who have previously had tensor threads or tissue inducers, I recommend hydrodissection or subcision using a cannula, in order to reduce fibrosis in the skin and enable the product to spread evenly and reduce the risk of it accumulating in certain areas. This “over-performance” by Lanluma® can be explained by the fact that it is more concentrated than similar products on the market. Therefore, a double or triple dilution is more suitable for thinner skin, including certain areas of the body such as the inner arms.

Stimulation, subtle volumisation, lifting and firming
Lanluma® is in a category of its own on the market of collagen biostimulators. This is why the laboratory has set up two training paths, enabling practitioners to master the many indications for the face and body. The more complex areas (décolleté, neck, hands and inner arms) require specific training.
Thanks to its ability to stimulate the fibroblasts to produce new collagen and its volumising effect due to the tightening and firming effect generated in the tissues, Lanluma® can be used to naturally redefine the contours of the face and certain areas of the body and smooth flaws such as bony hands, cellulitis and wrinkly knees. On the face, the product is highly effective for restoring the facial contours and filling hollowed-out temples or cheeks, for a brighter and fresher appearance. The volumes are restored without looking over-plumped, wrinkles are significantly reduced and the features are subtly lifted. The skin is densified and recovers its structure, which is often lost during the menopause. My perimenopausal patients love this product, particularly its long-lasting results, which can last up to 24 months.
After-care

After-care is very important to achieve optimal results and enable the product to position itself correctly and spread evenly. The treatment area needs massaging for five minutes, five times a day for two weeks. Patients like the fact that this routine allows them to take an active role in their treatment. It is important to explain that they must avoid exposing the area to the sun or heat (sauna, steam room) for at least 10 days after injection. They should also avoid any strenuous exercise for one week. These recommendations give them the impression of having a “relaxing week off”, they say and might even contribute to the positive feedback given for this treatment.
