Specific expectations, a tailored approach
Ecce Homo: “Behold the Man”, faced with one of the essential treatments in aesthetic medicine: hyaluronic acid injections. Although women are often the focus of discussion, men are increasingly becoming enthusiastic advocates of this treatment. But do their expectations differ from those of women? And if so, what are they?
Primarily “Anti-Aging” Injections for Men…
While women are generally concerned with maintaining a youthful appearance, with the objective of appearing and remaining “attractive”, men tend to pursue treatment with a more “anti-aging” objective, in order to remain “dynamic” and “in good shape”. Thus, men request injections intended to soften a glabellar frown line that gives “a worried, concerned or angry look”, or to fill hollow temples, dark circles and tear troughs that create “a tired appearance”, as well as nasolabial folds and marionette lines that convey “a sad look”.

…And Also Masculinisation Injections!
The other request men bring to me, in addition to wanting to appear “dynamic and in good shape”, is the desire for “virilisation” or “masculinisation” of the face, as aging can alter certain typically masculine features. These so-called masculine characteristics on a youthful face are, from top to bottom, a sloping forehead in profile, prominent brow ridges supporting low and horizontal eyebrows, a straight nose, pronounced cheekbones positioned lower than in women, square and well-defined jaw angles, and a broad, projecting chin. A model? Michelangelo’s David! Ah, those Italians… My challenge with male patients is therefore either to create these masculine features de novo on a face that initially presents few of them and displays characteristic volume deficiencies, or simply to restore or enhance pre-existing masculine features that time has altered, without “feminising” the face in the process.
In Practice
Injections therefore mainly concern the cheekbones, tear troughs, and above all sagging jaw angles and chin, which, once re-proportioned using highly volumising hyaluronic acids, restore those virile square jaws and chins (which, in fact, many men attempt to simulate by wearing thick beards trimmed angularly along the jawline and chin!). The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes, with results visible immediately, and rare potential transient and reversible side effects similar to those observed with injections in women: redness, swelling or small bruises at the injection sites. The effects last on average between 12 and 18 months.
Thanks to hyaluronic acid injections, men too can once again feel more dynamic, in shape, and inspire others to say as they pass by: Ecco Uomo, now there is a handsome man!
