Aesthetic medicine is expanding and diversifying. The launch of innovative gels with different textures and integration capabilities has pushed the bar even higher, allowing for ultra-precise procedures using less product. The popularity of aesthetic medicine among Millennials and their quest for non-standard beauty is also pushing the boundaries. Today’s beauty conveys our emotions while respecting each individual’s unique character.
A range of high-tech fillers
The highly specific demands from our young and well-informed patients have inspired us to test innovative products, techniques and devices that we can use to hone our expertise and develop new techniques and “tricks”. After being asked by Sinclair laboratory to try the MaiLi range, I was won over by the very different properties of the four gels, as well as the high quality of the syringes provided for carrying out the treatment, which make the procedure very easy to perform and comfortable for the patient.
The rheological qualities of the gels mean that they have very different properties. Volume is designed to lift the skin, while Extreme creates unparalleled volume that combines projection with suppleness – it is injected using a fine needle with a good extrusion force – for enhanced tissue integration. To treat marked wrinkles and the lips, Define certainly lives up to its name, as does Precise for lines and fine wrinkles. The gels do not cause swelling, thanks to their controlled hydrophilia. Both the products injected superficially and those that are injected more deeply integrate well into the tissue. The cross-linking technology in an inert atmosphere helps with the gels’ projection ability and elasticity, meaning that a smaller amount of product can be used.
A natural look for mature patients
The classic demand for rejuvenation in women aged between 45 and 70, who want a natural-looking yet fresher appearance, is certainly satisfied here. We are dealing with faces whose hollow areas need filling and transforming into convex areas that catch the light. In the same session, I use Extreme on the temple area and chin, and Volume for the cheekbones and cheeks. To plump the lips in a natural-looking way with a supple product that respects their movement, I use Define.
With regard to the lower eyelids, I prefer to treat this area in two steps. First, by injecting into the cheekbones, right to the bone, with Define or Volume to enhance their projection. Ano- ther advantage is that this reduces the distance between the lower eyelid and the cheekbone, for an immediate rejuvenating effect. Two weeks later, I inject Precise into the tear trough to fill the hollow and combat under-eye circles. I prefer to space the two treatments apart, to avoid any swelling. In most cases, a complete makeover requires just 5 to 6 syringes, which is a good thing for the patients.
A visible transformation and specific demands
Millennials, meanwhile, want the changes made to their faces to be visible, to tie in with the stereotypes conveyed by social media. They come to their appointments armed with photos and know all about the products and prices.
The main requests are for the lips, jawline and chin. Many young patients ask for the “Russian lips” technique, which involves injecting in from the edge of the lip in a retro-tracing pattern to make the lips “spill out”. This requires an HA such as Define for a moderate request and Volume if the patient wants a more exaggerated look.
The second most common request is a well-defined jawline in women, square and more virile in men, in order to make the face look stronger, dynamic, with a well-defined jaw angle. The work is completed by focusing on the tip of the chin, a key area because it reflects light in the lower third of the face. The chin and jawline are important because the facial morphology has both an emotional and psychological impact, which is, quite rightly, important to young people. For example, people with a receding chin feel more assertive once their chin has been brought forward.
Another demand is for “foxy eyes”, which in- volves lifting the tail of the eyebrow by injecting into the small hollows above and in the tail of the eyebrow. Here, 0.3 or 0.4ml on each side is sufficient.
This new MaiLi range allows us to satisfy the various requests from my younger and more mature patients, both men and women, thanks to the precision of the injections and the products’ intrinsic qualities. The gels are very pleasant to work with, including Extreme, which is the densest and creates the most projection. They offer precision and comfort thanks to the high quality of the syringes and the extrusion force of the gels. They are premium products that live up to their promises.
